Following their standout 2024 LP Everyone Laughs, Baltimore’s scrappy post-punks Powerwasher crank up the PSI with their latest offering, Pressure. Clocking in at just under 15 minutes, the new EP oscillates between familiar punk attitude and genre-bending experimentation in a hook-laden ode to completely losing your shit. Abandoning their usual process of recording everything live, the four-piece treated this EP like a true “studio project.” These five meticulously crafted songs expand the band’s sonic palette beyond Post-Punk and Post-Hardcore, seamlessly integrating elements of No Wave and Power Pop, and include an unexpected feature from notable weirdo rapper RXKNephew.
While the production quality has greatly improved, the songwriting stands out even more. Brainy, barking lyrics probe the teeth-gritting hyperconsciousness and dissociative stupor induced by a fully mediated life, slicing like a box cutter through wall-of-sound choruses and stripped-down, tripped-out bridges alike. With Pressure, Powerwasher finds a tiny hole in rock ’n’ roll, stretches it beyond its natural limit, and invites you to enter.
